Native Fauna is something I’ve very passionate about. I love having a tortoise in our garden. They are my favorite kind of backyard pet. My daughters were thrilled when we got her, especially my youngest, who had never seen one before. We adopted her on April 1st, 2023. She was tagged number 025, and after much voting, we named her Strawberry Flower. We ensured her habitat was secure and excitedly introduced her to her new home.
During the first week, we watched her explore and adjust to her new surroundings before handling her more. Strawberry, our new friend, is quite sociable and approaches us whenever she hears our voices. This could be because we usually bring food when we visit her habitat. Luckily, we have three hibiscus bushes and purslane that grow naturally, which Strawberry loves. Additionally, the girls love to give her arugula and pumpkin leaves from our garden.
Today, I decided to give Strawberry some extra enrichment by letting her out of her enclosed habitat. I set up a hose and flooded a small garden area. She enjoyed soaking her head in the water, pooling between the rocks, and nibbling on new leaves from the trumpet vine. A tortoise is a backyard pet you need to keep your eye on, so after she had a few more bites of the flowers, I put her back in her habitat to soak up some sun and nap.
The Sonoran Desert tortoise is an intriguing reptile that inhabits the arid landscapes of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. This native fauna faces various threats, such as habitat loss, illegal pet trade, and climate change, making them a concern for conservation efforts. It is important to protect these gentle giants to maintain the Sonoran Desert ecosystem balance.
Check your local fish and game for ideas on how you can help conserve wildlife in your area.
And have fun doing it!
Omg I’m in love with your baby girl strawberry flower…
